VJ is a powerful video server platform optimized for high paced studio production environments.
Based on Orad's HDVS video server range with up to 8 configurable inputs and outputs, VJ provides a reliable turnkey solution for different tasks. Multiple ingest channels, high-speed playlist editing and playback while recording, integrated with the entire tapeless workflow - VJ is built to maximize production efficiency and flexibility.
8 channels – fully flexible configuration
VJ server platform can support up to 8 video channel and can easily switch to any input / output configuration, maximizing the production's flexibility to best utilize the server's capabilities according to production's needs. The same server can be used for ingest of 8 synchronized multi camera angles, and an hour later, run as 4 inputs and 4 outputs to support studio playback, or any other configuration.
Flexible video formats
VJ's ingest and playback is based on durable FPGA encoding, maximizing the platform performance, and ensuring maximized image quality, regardless of the complexity of the encoded stream.
The same I/O boards can switch between multiple codecs, including DVCPRO SD, DVCPRO HD, DNxHD 120/145 or 185/220 and XDcam HD 50 4:2:2.
Edit while ingest – instant turnaround
VJ server and controller provide powerful toolset for playlist editing of live incoming feeds.
The user can easily create sub clips from the ingest feed, drag and drop those segments into a playlist, make real time changes like trimming or extending any of the items in the playlist, reorder by drag and drop, set different transitions between the items, set different playout speeds, and more.
VJ playlist can serve different requirements in the production environment, such as building a rundown, which will simplify the operation during studio playback. With live to tape productions, VJ can record the program feed, edit out any pickup or production mistakes, eliminating the need for craft editing, reducing costs, and turnaround time.
Files import and export – with a click of a button
VJ Server can interface directly to any external storage device for fast, simple and reliable import and export of video files.
VJ server advanced architecture eliminates the need for any intermediate hardware, providing a direct export to the shared storage, using standard Ethernet infrastructure.
Windows, MacOS, NAS, SAN, or even a standard USB drive, can easily connect to VJ server, by one of the supported protocols, NFS, CIFS, SMBFS.
VJ supports the export of the entire recorded clip, any segment of the clip, or export of a playlist, either as separated items, or one consolidated file.
NetStream – Enhancing the tapeless workflow
With the growing requirement for fast turnaround, VJ NetStream engine offers a unique capability which records all ingested feeds both on the server internal storage and at the same time on an external storage.
This system architecture provides the best of both worlds, with the safety and durability of the internal storage and the enhanced workflow, having all the ingest material on the central storage in real time.
The exported stream, wrapped in real-time as QuickTime or MXF, is instantly available for post-production work, the second the recording stops.
VJ internal storage is used as a huge buffer, which can manage network delays or failures, and will keep NetStream based on the available network performance, so no footage will ever be lost.
A unique XDcam workflow, allow Adobe Premiere users to edit the ingested material, while ongoing ingest.
Embedded Proxy Engine
One of VJ's unique features in the embedded Proxy engine is that it can generate a proxy instance of the high resolution file in real time for all ingesting channels.
When using the proxy engine, each file is exported in two flavours; the high resolution file according the selected video codec and the proxy flavor which will frame accurately match the high resolution file.
This unique capability delivers significant advantages to the workflow. There is always a perfect match between the high resolution and proxy files, as they are created in parallel. This will also ensure the perfect match between the files, providing the confidence that editing on the proxy files will later provide a transparent switch to the high resolution file.
Another significant advantage of VJ's internal Proxy engine is that the proxy is available at the same time as the high resolution, as oppose to external transcoders, which transcode as a post process.
VJ's proxy engine, will shorten turnaround time, prevent mistakes, save rack space, and reduce operational costs.
Synchronized multi camera ingest
In productions which require ingest of multiple incoming feeds, VJ's ability to ingest all cameras in a synchronized manner, provides a huge advantage to the workflow. With synchronized ingest, by pressing only one button, all recording channels start to record on the exact same frame, generating separate recordings, which share the same IN and OUT points, and the same duration.
Synchronized ingest make the transfer from ingest to post-production environment much faster and easier, as there is no need to re-synchronize all the camera angle on the craft editing time line.
Among VJ's unique features is the option to consolidate a playlist into one file. Many times during a studio production, while recording a live to tape show, there is a need to stop shooting because of technical problems, talent mistakes, and other production issues. In such cases, there is a need to do a pickup to seamlessly start from the last stop point.
With the VJ consolidation tool, the operator can add the different segments into one playlist, preview and trim the transition points according to need, and export the playlist into the shared storage, using to consolidation tool.
VJ consolidation is much faster and cost effective compared to existing post production workflows.
Simple yet powerful interface
VJ simplifies production tasks and workflows by enabling the user to control and monitor all channels from a single user interface with access to time codes, clip progress, playlists, and more. VJ's interface is completely configurable, allowing the user to define his workspace according to his preferences, including adding and removing channels as needed.
VJ controller can connect to multiple servers at the same time, allow one operator to manage multiple servers from one interface.
Reliability and durability
Based on Orad's server product line, VJ server hardware is designed and manufactured for the high standards required from a professional broadcast server.
Using server class components, build into a dedicated server chassis, the VJ server provides exceptional durability to meet the requirements of live production.
Video data is protected with RAID 6 ensuring that even in the unlikely event that two disks are down, no data is lost and there is no decrease in server performance.
Video disks can be easily accessed from the front panel, without removing the server from the rack.
To optimize server reliability and redundancy, VJ uses a hot swap power supply and runs on the reliable Linux operating system.
Integrated with Orad's iFind MAM solution
Embedded into Orad's production workflow, VJ can serve multiple needs in fast turnaround productions. When used as multi line ingest server, VJ is controlled by Orad's iFind ingest scheduler, with the option for manual crash record from the VJ GUI. When fast turnaround edits are required, operators can turn ingested material into a playlist on the fly, editing while recording using VJ's intuitive playlist editing tool set. In studio playout environment, iFind users can push media from central storage to the playout server with a click of a button from any iFind web interface in the production environment.
